Futon Covers In My Memory

futon coversOur family’s decision to get a futon marked a turning point in our adolescent youth. Instead of a couch, we bough a big futon for the downstairs and bought a couple of beautiful futon covers. The one we normally dressed it in was burgundy with patterned green diamonds. It was soft and comfortable and we watched many movies on it. Within a year, I was having friends over and inviting them to spend the night — on our futon covers. We’d lay it down and it would sleep three or four adolescent boys straight across. When we woke the next morning to the smell of sausage and eggs in the kitchen, we were pleased to find our necks and backs entirely bendable.

Sometimes,we switched the futon covers when my friends were  too rowdy and brought food downstairs, which they weren’t supposed to do. The other futon cover was velvety and black. I had chosen that one. We used that futon until it started to get lumpy and misshapen. Finally, my parents decided to throw it away. Since we didn’t live there any more, they were going to move. It was no longer useful, it just took up room. But those futon covers remain in my memory.

How to Get a Tea Stain Out of a Slipcover

I am profoundly passionate about my tea. In fact, I am sipping some Early Grey as I write this. However, I am equally zealous about keeping a clean home. I like pretty things, and therefore, I want my house to be well-taken care of. slipcover

So, imagine if you may, my abject horror when I spilled tea on the slipcover of my favorite sofa. I do not know how  it happened, I seemed to trip over my own feet, and then there it was, an angry tea stain glaring up at me, mocking my normally fastidious care. This was doubly traumatizing; I had wasted a large portion of my cup of tea, I had discolored my furniture. After momentarily lamenting the mess and mourning the spillage of my preferred elixir of life, I roused myself enough to spring into action.

Luckily, getting a tea stain out of a slipcover is doable. I presoaked the slipcover in a solution that consisted of laundry detergent and cool water, the ratio was roughly two tablespoons of detergent to one gallon of water, for roughly thirty minutes. I then pretreated the stain with a laundry prewash stain remover. And, finally, I threw it in the washing machine and laundered it in hot water with color bleach.

Luckily, the slipcover fared better than the neglected remnants of my poor cup of tea, which grew cold while I performed my rescue service.

My grandparents gave me my first set of furniture for my first apartment’s living room. They were hand-me downs but to us they were luxurious.
